What Composer is not

Composer is a real-time live compositing platform. It's adjacent to several other categories of tooling that it deliberately doesn't replace:

  • Composer is not a non-linear video editor. No timeline, no clip cutting, no transition wipes between cuts. Edit footage in Premiere, Resolve, FCP or similar before importing into Composer; use Composer for live output and live operation.
  • Composer is not a graphics-design tool. No vector drawing, no typography rendering, no Photoshop-style image editing. Design graphics in Photoshop, Affinity, Illustrator or your tool of choice; import the result as PNG / SVG / image-with-alpha and place as a layer.
  • Composer is not a video transcoder. It can ingest one format and output another in the live render pipeline, but it isn't optimised for batch-converting a media library. Use FFmpeg or HandBrake for batch transcoding offline.
  • Composer is not a captions / subtitles tool. Composer can pass through CEA-608 / 708 captions on its inputs and outputs but doesn't author captions itself. Use a captioning service or Speech-to-Text operator with a downstream caption renderer.
  • Composer is not an automated stream director. Scripts, the Script Engine, and Connectors can drive Composer programmatically — but the project still has to be authored beforehand. Composer responds to triggers; it doesn't decide what to do unprompted.
